How could I forget that hot 4th of July in 1970? My parents, my brother 16 and I, at 17 stepped into that St. Louis courtroom.

A huge red, white and blue flag covered the front wall. In the hush of the room, we raised our hands and renounced our allegiance to Bolivia and pledged our allegiance to the United States of America.

The honor and privilege of becoming citizens sparked fireworks of gratitude within us. But what we didn’t know was that through the years, drastic, painful changes would take place. The land where dreams came true turned to a nightmare where division rules, insults get louder, mediocrity is accepted, violence replaced common sense, morality is ridiculed entitlement is applauded and laziness is encouraged.

However, not for a moment has the American spirit waned. Those who burn our flag need to know that out of the ashes rises even a stronger will to conquer evil, stand for truth, choose peace, look for God’s justice, embrace morality, believe in the Bible. And most of all, declare with no hesitation that from our hearts, no one can take God out, silence His Word, remove His promises, destroy the monument of His truth and burn the flag of His love.

Let me know if you’re that kind of citizen who still believes, truly believes that we do stand for independence. But, with unbridled passion, we declare we’re still completely dependent on God. …
