I was 17, my brother was 16 and we raised our right hand along with our parents. Our hearts beat fast with excitement as we renounced our allegiance to Bolivia and proudly pledged our allegiance to the United States of America.

It was a moment of glory. It was a step of honor. And it still reminds us of God’s reward for the four years of arduous work, of sacrifice and of endless documents rendered to the US. Immigration Department who finally approved our entry into the United States.
But in doing so, we also entered a new phase of our lives where appreciation, honor and gratitude are the reasons for my family to celebrate each 4th of July.
